From their underground home in the sewers of New York City, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fight petty criminals, evil masterminds and even aliens. Trained by their sensei, Master Splinter, in the art of Ninjutsu, these anthropomorphic heroes are skilled ninja warriors. Though their activities remain unknown to society, they defend the city from the dangers of the underworld and often clash with the Foot, an ancient and criminal ninja clan whose leader, Shredder, is the Turtles' greatest foe.
As a boy, Shredder, then called Oroku Saki, joined the Foot Clan, training as a ninja to avenge his brother Nagi's murder at the hand of Splinter's owner Hamato Yoshi. Nagi had tried to steal the affections of Yoshi's beloved, but when she refused him, a feud erupted between Nagi and Yoshi, ending in Nagi's death. Yoshi and his beloved Shen fled from Japan to New York City, and once his training was complete, Shredder followed him. Though he bested Yoshi and Shen, Splinter was able to escape and later morphed into the anthropomorphic rat who would train the Turtles to battle against Shredder and his clan.
